EARLY IDAHO SONGS OF THE MONTH - March 2011

Battle of the Flu. This wonderful satirical song was published in The Silver Messenger newspaper in Challis, Idaho on November 18, 1918 by Clarence E. Eddy.  Eddy (1874-1936) was well-known across the American West and beyond as the “Poet-Prospector” of Idaho and Nevada.  “Battle of the Flu” hilariously commented on the rumors of imminent armed conflict between Idahoans from the competing mining towns of Challis and Mackay, because of the Spanish Flu quarantine illegally instituted by community leaders in Challis.  The rendition here is by Gary Eller.
