VOCAL - GRAVE OF LIZZIE KING (click to hear)

"Grave of Lizzie King" is a about a tragic love triangle that played out in 1878 in Bonanza, the frontier gold/silver mining town near present day Challis . Lizzie and both of her husbands died that year by gunshot. Lyrics were written by the colorful Clarence E. Eddy, refered to as "Idaho's poet-prospector", and published in 1902 in his book of poems and songs "The Pinnacle of Parnassus". The melody is given as that of "Green Fields of Virginia", a popular song of the late 1800s that later was recorded by the Carter Family, among many other string bands. "Pinnacle" was reprinted in 2005 by the Yankee Fork Interpretive Center. We are grateful to Kathleen Durfee of the Yankee Fork center for making this most interesting book known to us.

INSTRUMENTAL - LEWIS AND CLARK CENTENNIAL MARCH

Songs related to the Corps of Discovery that predate the late 1900s are rare. This song was written in 1902 and recorded for sale at the Lewis and Clarke Exposition of 1905 in Portland, making it by far the earliest known recording known about the expedition.
